Her Wedding Day

She was beautiful bride and her day had come. The man she planned to love for the rest of her life waited for her. Her gown was perfect. Her mother had ordered it from Paris. Her dark eyes twinkled beneath the layers of ivory lace and satin. Flowers filled every inch of the hotel lobby and beautiful candles lit her way down the staircase.

She could see her Father’s broad smile at the bottom of the stairs. He held his hand out to her, ready to walk her down the aisle. The music started and she took her first step..

Baniff Springs Hotel in Calgary, Alberta- The main staircase at Baniff Springs Hotel was lined with candles for a wedding being held at the hotel. When the bride came down the staircase, the train of her dress caught on a candle and went into flames. In a state of panic, she fell down the stairs breaking her neck and died. It is said the ghost of this bride is still seen coming down the staircase of Baniff Springs Hotel. Although , today the stairs have been blocked and no other wedding has ever been allowed to be held at the hotel.

In 2011, the Baniff Springs Hotel is a popular ski resort nestled in the Rocky Mountains. My story is fictitious, but the story of the bride who fell to her death and remains to haunt Baniff Springs Hotel- is said to be true.

Our theme this week for the The Artist Challenge was ‘Paranormalcy’ (and yes, we know that‘s not a word.We were just having some Halloween fun.) This little ghostly bride is a fictitious character (not the ghost of Baniff Springs) and the wedding dress she wears is from the 20’s. She’s acrylic and done on a 12”x 12” gallery wrapped canvas. THE TRUTH ALWAYS COMES OUT

Sunday (Oct 16) there was an extraordinary segment on 60 Minutes about Vincent Van Gogh. Ever since college, Vincent has been one of my favorites. I think because his story was so painful and heart wrenching, He’s just unforgettable. I actually saw an exhibit of his work at the L.A. County Museum when it was own tour from his Amsterdam Museum. People were lined up for blocks to see the exhibit! (I stood in line for two hours and I had bought my tickets months prior. )

Anyway, two writers are doing in-depth research for a book about Van Gogh and guess what? THE OLD TALE OF VINCENT VAN GOGH GOING OUT IN THE WHEAT FIELD AND SHOOTING HIMSELF ISN’T TRUE. The trajectory of bullet in his lower abdomen would have made it virtually impossible for him to have shot himself. And he was shot at a distance. All of this was documented by the police and later the autopsy.

What these writers discovered is there were 3 mischievous teenage boys in the town who took delight in constantly teasing Vincent when he was out painting. One of these boys admitted (decades later) that he (the boy) had taken the gun from his own home. It was a gun that belonged to his father and not Vincent's -as the story goes. The conjecture is that the gun probably went off accidentally in the process of their antics. The terrified the boys ran off and left Vincent. (As to the exact details of the shooting, all 3 boys took the facts to their own graves.)

ALSO- Vincent was NOT found in the wheat fields as the story goes. He was shot in a farmyard only a half mile from the restaurant (where he lived) and staggered back down the street under his own power. (Local residents reported they heard a gun shot) He survived for 30 hours post the shooting. His brother Theo was by his side when he died.

And here‘s another shocker- the ominous LAST painting,“Wheatfields with Crows’, which has been described by art historians as a clear indication of Vincent's thoughts of suicide and depression- wasn’t Vincent’s last painting. It was done 2 weeks before he died and he painted several more ‘happy and colorful’ paintings in the following weeks.

The tale of Vincent’s dramatic suicide was completely fabricated by Adeline Ravoux. Her father owned the restaurant where Vincent rented the upstairs flat (his famous little room) above the business. She either admitted, and/or it was discovered, years later she made up the story.

You know, I found myself feeling a little angry. We’ve always been lead to believe that Vincent was a crazed out-of-control artist. He's been depicted repeatedly in movies and books as a genius lunatic who in a manic moment went out in the 'very wheat field he painted' and ended his misery.

The relative contradiction and most telling account: Vincent knew he was dieing, when the police asked if he did this to himself. Vincent said, “I 'believe' so. Don't accuse anybody else."

He didn't say-'Yes, I did' or 'Yes- I want to die' or anything a suicidal maniac would say. Point of fact- in what had to be tremendous pain from the gun shot, he walked half a mile attempting to get help. And in this process he adds 'don't accuse anybody else'? Interesting, huh?

Vincent Van Gogh's last dieing act was to protect 3 foolish youngsters that were just starting their own lives and had done something very very stupid.

As always, Mr. Van Gogh ..you pull at our heart strings like no other artist before or after you.

In Regard to My Master Series & Commission Work?

My intention with this series is a tribute to individuals whose names or work we all know. They’re subjects who (whether real or fictitious characters) are legendary and still remain symbolic in our society. BUT THIS IS THE THING: You’ll never find a portrait of Elvis or Marilyn in my Master Series. These Masters usually aren’t the individuals you’ll first think of as masters. They are intellectual properties and icons that have truly influenced, enhanced or enriched our lives in some way just by their existence. And as stated, some may merely be characters…but none the less iconic. We may even model ourselves by who they were and use their names in our everyday conversations. They are all of an era and the beginning of a time of sophistication we still relish today.

I had no sooner started this series, (I think I only had 3 completed) and a customer contacted me. He wanted to purchase Houdini. In short order he wrote me again and asked if I did ‘commission work.’ No Way Jose! I hate doing commission work! I’ve spent my whole adult life doing work for ‘other people’ and hit my quota for this lifetime! I do what Vikki wants to do -now!

Of course - I didn‘t say any of that to him. I told him I really didn’t do commissions. If there was someone he wanted me to do and I felt the subject fit within my series, I’d come up with a painting. If he wanted it fine. If not, that was fine too. The painting would become a new addition to my series and for sale in my gallery.

I have to tell you- this ‘commission customer’ became one of the best experiences I’ve had in my years online. Over this past year, he had 3 other subjects he wanted for his collection. He let me run with the concepts and portray each character as I saw them in my mind’s eye. I knooow. Lucky me. Even more important, he really understood where I was going with the series and inspired me far more than I ever told him.

Busy, busy and no time to write a blog story but I do have some new paintings to show you. We had our ‘End of the Summer Sale” on the Artist Challenge Saturday. These are 3 new floral paintings I completed last week. All are flowers that trees produce rather than singular plants. (I have a couple more in works. ) They were great fun to do.

No Big Deal

Late yesterday afternoon all of San Diego was doing what it does every work day. It was a Thursday and it had been an exceptionally hot day. The temps were in the high 80’s and 90’s, even in our coastal regions. Air conditioners were blasting at full power. The freeways were backing up with the evening’s stop and go traffic. The city trolleys charged up and down the hills on their normal routes. People clad in tank tops, shorts and sandals walked their dogs and restaurants prepared for the evening crowds. To any onlooker all appeared to be just another hot summer day in San Diego.

It was at exactly 4:27 PM when it all came to a complete stop. The electrical hum that runs our city and all its outlying towns (including Camp Pendleton) suddenly shut down and left us with only an eerie quiet. Even the San Onofre giant nuclear reactors went silent.

SDG&E didn’t know what to tell us other than it was a multi- state blackout that had taken our electricity with it. They told us even Mexico’s Baja Peninsula went black.

We didn’t quiet know what to expect. So many cities on the East coast have experienced black outs with wide spread panic. Looting and scoundrels of every sort seem to come out in full force. Tempers flare and neighbors go at odds. People even arm themselves.

Let me tell you how San Diego dealt with its blackout:

Civilians got out of their cars and helped to patrol traffic at intersections. With credit card machines disabled, restaurants and shops invited people to gather at their outdoor seating. They gave away food, ice cream and cold drinks. Gas Stations allowed drivers with cars on empty to park their vehicle at the stations and go home. Convenience stores gave away cases of water. The bars served beer and fired up their outdoor barbeques. Cooling stations were immediately set up for the elderly throughout the county. Fuel was donated to keep all hospital emergency generators going. Families took their children to the beaches for camp outs and neighbors gathered for backyard parties.

As night found us, all of San Diego lit up once again with the brightest stars and moon you could ever hope to see. The familiar and missing electrical hum had been replaced with conversation and laughter. Oh, we did have one crime. Someone stole a bicycle.

No big deal. I love San Diego. It’s a good place to call home.

SIR ALFRED HITCHCOCK

You know, I can still see him so clearly in my mind. One of my childhood memories is his TV show, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS. It would always open with Alfred standing center stage. Occasionally he’d use props but frequently he would just be standing there in his tailored suit. Face-forward, hands clasped on his big tummy, he’d look straight into the camera (as I show him here.) With a wonderful English accent, round expressive face and eyes, he’d introduce himself and talk directly to the viewers. With a slightly ominous (and most definitely mischievous) tone, he’d ‘prepare us’ for what we were about to see. In his conclusion he’d slowly turn into the profile of his trademark shadow.

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was a British film director and producer. He is considered the most influential filmmaker of all-time and cultural icon. He was born on August 13, 1899 in Leytonstone, London. He was the second son of three children of William Hitchcock (1862–1914), a grocer, and Emma Jane Hitchcock (1863–1942). He was raised Catholic and attended a Jesuit Classic school.

He often described his childhood as being very lonely and sheltered, a situation compounded by his obesity. He felt he had been treated harshly as a child and frequently accused of things ‘he didn’t do.’ Hitchcock said his father sent him to the local police station with a note asking the officer to lock him away for ten minutes as punishment for bad behavior. Hitchcock's mother would often make him stand for hours at the foot of her bed (where she could see him) for misbehavior. Like many of his life experiences, this one would later be used for the portrayal of the character of Norman Bates in his movie Psycho.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades. His distinctive directorial style is still imitated today. He pioneered a moving camera technique which made the viewers feel as if they were moving through the scene. He framed shots to maximize anxiety, fear, or empathy and the endings to his psychological thrillers were always a surprise.

His life, and career are so vast and long I can’t begin to summarize for this blog, but you can read an online synopsis of Alfred Hitchcock here.

Hitchcock died at the age of 81 peacefully in his sleep on April 29, 1980 in Los Angeles. He was survived by his wife Alma and his daughter.

The Real Amelia & Remember Me

Our theme for the Artist Challenge this week was ‘Remember Me.” I chose Amelia Earhart as my subject and she’s the latest addition to my Master’s Series. My work is based on an actual photo of Amelia. Although she’s been portrayed by many wonderful actresses, I think it would be fair to say none have quite done her justice. Amelia was a highly intelligent and absolutely stunning natural blond beauty.

She was born Amelia Mary Earhart- July 24, 1897 and went missing July 2, 1937. She was declared legally dead January 5, 1939.

Amelia was a noted American aviator and author. She was the first woman to receive the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. She was a faculty member of Purdue University and counseled women in careers in aviation. She was also a member of the National Woman's Party, and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment.

During an attempt to fly around the world in 1937 she disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day. Amelia is most definitely a Master of ‘Remember Me’ and one we will never forget.

A GOOD BOY, “Jealousy” & the Young Cut Group

Early Spring I received an email from a theater production group called 'Young Cut’ in the UK. They were preparing to open a new play called A GOOD BOY at the Etcetera Theatre in London. They contacted me because they’d seen one of my paintings (“Jealousy“, 2008) and wanted to use it for their play.

I sent them what they’d needed for print, and had actually forgotten about it until this morning when I got my mail. A large envelope was in my box stamped “Royal Mail.”

The production group had sent me posters, programs and advertising cards created for the play and personal note of thanks from James Gilles, the actor who had initially contacted me. They had included my name in the gratitude list on the program and also credited me personally, The Red Chair Gallery and listed my website URL.

Young Cut Theater Group's focus is to promote/showcase new writing and young actors. As I looked at photos of the cast of A GOOD BOY I was absolutely blown away at what a gorgeous group of young people make up this company.

As far as the play- “A GOOD BOY”-
The play is written by award winning Stephen Doran and directed by Robin Hudson. As James explained to me, the play is about ‘a young man who is so jealous of the his girlfriend he goes into a rage’.

Story:
“In a small studio flat in East London a young couple have the rest of their lives to look forward to. They are intelligent, good looking and in love. Life is perfect until Sam’s curiosity begins to question his more sexually liberated fiancé’s past...

London Theater Review- Andrew Taylor gave A GOOD BOY 3 stars and stated it was- “Enjoyable and quirky relationship drama" “…the play is given emotional depth by the performances of Gillies, Beedle and Sabet. The fraught yet believable relationships explored in the play give it dramatic intensity. 'A Good Boy' is worth watching for the strong performances of the cast …”

The Cast included- George Gillies (Sam), Georgina Beedle (Josie), James Gillies (Stuart), Josh Taylor (Matt) and Scarlett Sabet (Elizabeth).

A GOOD BOY ran at the Etcetera Theater from May 31st through June 4th.

CBS- Sunday Morning Airs ‘Abruzzi Sun Art’ 6/12/2011

Sun Art painting ‘Abruzzi’ ended a segment on Sunday Morning again today (6/12/2011). The show segment was about the art and history of terrariums. Abruzzi has become a favorite of the producers and been chosen to end 10 separate segments over the past 3 years.

Abruzzi was created in 2008. I named the painting for the first Sunday Morning Segment it aired on in 2009 about a beautiful little resort in Abruzzi, Italy.

“A No Theme Story” & FATHER'S DAY GALLERY

This is a true story without a theme. Although, a story with no theme is a theme in itself ..isn’t it? It could also be called an analogous derivation of something created with no specific source but a variety of things that make up it’s contents. Anyway as interesting as it is to expound on the philosophical theory of this tale, let’s put it aside and just tell the story.

The story takes place in 1492 in a small village in Sweden. The residents of this village were way ahead of their time. They believed in recycling everything they had. Nothing was ever thrown away. Everything in the town, including the cottages, shops, clothing and carriages- were created from a variety of discards from the village.

E. Johansson was the village Recycle Collection Technician. Point of fact: It was E.’s job to go to every home and pick up the garbage. But there was a problem. In 1492 plastic garbage cans had not yet been created. No one knew where to put their recyclables and there was great confusion. E. was the most confused of all! He didn’t know if things sitting in front, near, around or in the cottages were meant to be thrown away or not.

So, in review of this issue of 'no plastic garbage cans yet available', the towns people came up with a new village law: Each villager would move their discards to the very front of their cottage and place it in a pile. They would each place a sign in front of their pile that simply read- “E. COLLECT IT” .

Anyway as history records it, that is the origin of the word ‘eclectic’ . Don’t believe me? Let’s look up the definition of ‘eclectic’ according to WeBSter’s Dictionary-

e·clec·tic [i kléktik] varied: made up of parts from various sources; without a specific theme or authenticity [15th century. Via Scandinavian analogie of the Latin analogia based on the Greek analogia "no theme" (also see analogous for garbage)]

Wood Nymph

My name was Charles O’Malley and I was an artist. It happened on May 28th. I had gone deep into the woods early that morning hoping to find a landscape or earthen subject to paint. As I traversed trees and thickets, I could hear something following me and feel eyes on me. I assumed it was an animal and prayed it wasn’t predatory. I carried no weapon. Only my paint and canvas.

This feeling was so steady, I decided to ease down behind a large area of vegetation where I would be hidden. I would wait for my stalker to pass by and then continue on my way.

To my shock a creature no more than 30 cm tall stepped out from behind a tree and set down. It looked like an adult female in mere miniature. I had to restrain myself from running and placed my hands across my mouth to cover my erupting gasp . I didn’t want to scare it off. It was extraordinary.

It looked human yet in utter perfection. As I looked closer I realized it couldn’t be mortal. The ears were pointed, the hands ended in claws and it’s skin had greenish tone! I didn’t know if I was looking at a spirit, devil or maybe one of God’s holy creatures, but I will tell you this; it was nothing I had ever seen before!

It couldn’t see me and gave no indication that it knew I was there. I had to capture this vision on my canvas!

I quietly pulled out my tools, sketched and rendered it as exacting as I could. I don’t know how many hours passed but it set completely motionless …as if it did know it was my muse.

As extraordinary as this experience was, I realized darkness was coming. I had to leave the woods before night fell or I wouldn’t be able to find my way out. I was anxious to tell my friends about this discovery of the century.

I actually don’t know what happened , but as I rose to my feet I was hit with such a force I fell back to the ground. The power was tantamount to a grizzly bear’s and I screammmmmmed! Everything became black.

That’s the end of my story and I’m sure you must think I died but understand clearly: If you choose to walk deep threw these woods one early morn and feel eyes are upon you… it might just be me.

According description of this 'mythological critter' known as a Wood Nymph (also Sprite)- they were 'of nature and life giving .' They were also prone to capturing mortal men for their 'needs.'

The Florist & Human Nature

The hustle and bustle of people and delivery vans was overwhelming. Florist came from every part of the country to enter the flower show. They brought huge boxes of exotic flowers from places she had never even heard of. Extraordinary vases were carefully unpacked from crates. The flurry of workers running and yelling back and forth put her head in a spin.

WHAT WAS SHE THINKING?! These were the pros: the best of the best. Florist of this ilk were far beyond anything she‘d ever be. These people created floral displays for presidents and celebrities. If she had any sense she would pack up her stuff and just leave!

Sitting down in her chair with her soda, her eyes filled with tears. She thought about how hard she had worked just to ‘be part of this show’. Now all she felt was stupid for even thinking she could compete.

Maybe she could walk away …but then how would she feel? No doubt, worse! NOPE. That’s not going to happen. She needed to get it together. She needed to remember it was an honor just to be at the show. That’s all that’s important.

She focused on her art deco design. She had worked so hard on it and had to remember it was good. In fact it, was her best work! Maybe not at the level of these people …but she had to have faith in it.

'Just get to work', she told herself! She set up her display table and opened her containers of flowers and the beautiful antique vase…. and that’s when it happened. A worker slammed his loading vehicle into her table. When he realized what he’d done, he panicked, reversed the truck, and crushed all her flowers in his wake. The vase shattered into tiny blistering pieces. He looked over at her and said "Sorry," and then sped away.

She stood speechless. The aroma in the convention hall was sickening now and her body and mind went into shock. Minutes prior she had tormented herself with insecurities…and now, in a split second, fate had decided it all. She turned and saw eyes were on her. Heads were shaking and looking down with pity. Humiliation couldn’t begin to define the moment and she couldn’t gather her thoughts.

Like a beaten down zombie, she stood her display table back on it’s crippled legs. She saw a couple of azaleas that had managed to escape the trucks wrath. She poured the soda out of the bottle and stuck them in it. She put her name card back on the table and set back down in the chair. She couldn’t get her breath. She just set looking out everyone ….

Her ‘Cola Bottle with Azaleas’ received Honorable Mention and graced the cover of The National 2011 Florist magazine. Her work was described as ‘The Heart of the Very Best.’

Womankind is in your charge. Bestowal of beauty, love and fertility are yours to do as you will. What are your plans?

Beauty- May she understand that her beauty is not of the flesh but of her heart. She will never use her beauty to manipulate others or define who she is. She will always care for herself and understand her beauty is a gift. And may she always find the necessary funds for a good Beverly Hills plastic surgeon post 40 earth years.

Love- May all women find a friend and companion in the one they choose to love. Above all things, may he be a kind a person and may she have the wisdom to know him when he crosses her path. Also- may he be a righteous man who offers to pay spousal support when she discovers he’s unfaithful pig and divorces him.

Fertility- May she be fruitful and bring precious new life to the earth. And may she remember when she is bringing this creature into the world, and her body is being ripped apart from limb to limb, that it is ‘she’ that forgot to take the birth control pill.

Addendum -Charity- May she always understand that being a woman isn’t easy and despite all the trials she’ll face she is indeed loved and blessed by the mere fact of being born a ’woman.’ And may she always be the primary holder of all credit cards.

Just a little fun. This is my submission for the current theme gallery #49 on the Artist Challenge- “April Love”.

I am absolutely in love with the paintings that came out of the 30’s and 40’s. They can be defined as traditional art -but they have a look & soft feel of their own that is so romantic and timeless. This painting is an example of my efforts to gravitate towards that style.

My character is loosely based on silent movie star ‘Mary Pickford’. With a slightly ’Romanesque nose’, her beauty was extraordinary and most worthy of representing the goddess Venus.

Facts about Goddess Venus: "She is the goddess of love, beauty and fertility and played a key role in many Roman religious spring festivals. From the third century BC, Roman upper classes identified her as the equivalent of the Greek goddess Aphrodite."

Charlie Chan

Charlie is the latest edition to my Master Series and was so much fun to research! I think we’re all familiar with the name ’Charlie Chan’ but few of us know much about him today.

Charlie Chan is a fictional Chinese-American detective created by author Earl Derr Biggers in 1923. Although the author conceived the character to be quite heroic, (versus evil Asian stereotypes like Fu Manchu)- Charlie was still controversial with the Asian American Community.

To describe the character of Charlie Chan, as the author intended him in his novel, “Chan walks with the light dainty step of a woman.” He is "very fat indeed ... an undistinguished figure in his Western clothes.”

The author went on to explain this was for the purpose of making him appear ‘non threatening’ when in truth he was the smartest cop on the force and sure to get the bad guy. Charlie was by all definition an intellectual and ‘very scientific’ in his approach to crime.

Despite Charlie’s good qualities, the Asian American community felt he reinforced certain Oriental stereotypes, such as speaking with an accent and possessing an overly tradition-bound subservient nature.

The first actor Fox Films cast for the roll of Charlie in their 1931 film was Swedish born Warner Oland. Although Oland claimed to have Mongolian ancestry, it was obvious in the old publicity shots Oland's eyebrows were plucked and his eyes were defined with eyeliner.

The film was a great success and Fox went on to make 15 more Charlie Chan Movies. After Oland's death two other American actors- Sydney Toler and Roland Winters were cast in the role. Twenty-eight more Charlie Chan Movies were made.

( I loved this Movie Poster! Prior to Technicolor they hand colorized the posters with some surprising results and undoubtedly an ‘artist's interpretation' to the colors of some men's clothing. Check out the man in back all in green.)

The character of Charlie Chan was so well loved radio and comic strip adaptations were even created and later a television series.

For nearly 50-60 years post the Fox movies, crime fighters became muscle bound fighting avengers of the law. Whether this had to do with wars Americans experienced - no one knows. BUT Charlie’s impact and the public’s desire to see analytical and scientific approach to crime fighting has returned to our screens today with TV shows such as CSI, Criminal Minds and Law & Order.

My intention with my painting of Charlie Chan was to show him as the distinguished and admired character Author Earl Derr Biggers intended him to be.

The Joke or “My Dear Mother"

To My Dear Mother,
We have always been so close and I have tried to be a good and loyal son. I want to take the opportunity to tell you, and pray you will understand, that I have certain needs that you cannot supply. I love you dearly but I must cut the cord between us now. I hope you are not heart broken. I have met a young woman and I shall be spending time with her this evening. Please don't be upset. I shall be back home and in my room before midnight.

My Dear Son James,
Do not despair. I received your letter and thank you for your honesty. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that I also have certain needs that you cannot supply and pray you understand. I’ve rented your room to my hair dresser for a little extra cash-o-la! I would also like to inform you, that while you read this, I will be whopping it up with the man behind the curtain. Therefore I will not be available for another sitting before noon tomorrow. Don’t wait up, Son.

I knoooow! I'm completely irreverant. Whistler must be turning over in his grave. But have to tell you, it was a lot of fun to paint my version of a Master's work.

F. Scott Fitzgerald- Tender is the Night

Being born an artist is synonymous to being born married forever. Husbands, wives and even children come and go- but art will never leave the artist and the artist will never stop being in love with his art.

This is my submission for our current theme on the Artist’s Challenge. The portrait is American Author F. Scott Fitzgerald. (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940 - author of Tender is the Night. )

His books were considered paradigm writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined himself. American society of the Roaring Twenties was the most influential decade for Fitzgerald's work. The Great Gatsby was considered his masterpiece, published in 1925.

Fitzgerald’s own life story is heart wrenching, complicated yet intriguing and he was also someone we couldn’t help but adore. I choose to show him in a bit of sensuous pose, thinking that most fitting. The suit he wears is one he frequently sported in publicity shots for his work.

He was of Irish Catholic descent, fair haired, handsome and a man who dearly loved his wife, Zelda. They had a turbulent (dare I say toxic) relationship. Their life together was a tale of outrageous parties and crazy drunken antics. Zelda and Fitzgerald had one child, ‘Scottie’ (who just died in 1986.)

Fitzgerald was a close friend to author Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway did not like Zelda and made no qualms about it. In addition to describing her as "insane" he claimed that she “encouraged her husband to drink so as to distract Scott from his work on his novel.”

Zelda was in and out of asylums and the medical bills a constant burden to Fitzgerald. In order to supplemented his income, he wrote short stories for magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post , Collier's Weekly , and Esquire and sold his novels to Hollywood studios.

His buddy Hemingway referred to these sales of Fitzgerald’s work as “whoring” his talents. It subsequently became a sore point in the authors’ friendship.

Fitzgerald eventually died due to complications of long term alcoholism. Although blamed on Zelda’s influences, Fitzgerald had been a heavy drinker since his college years.

Widow Murphy's Peppers

Widow Murphy had quite the garden. She grew the most flavorful vegetables anyone could ever hope to taste. When she came down the street with a basket to share, you could be assured you were in for a real treat.

Although, as these things go, there was a problem. Widow Murphy’s neighbor, Herbert, started helping himself to her vegetables. He’d climb over the fence at night and strip her plants bare. This really upset the Widow but she was at a loss how to keep Herbert out of her garden.

One day while she was talking to a neighbor about Herbert stealing her haul, an odd calm came over the Widow. An idea had just occurred to the her and if you‘d seen her face, you’d have thought the Widow had seen Jesus himself! She quietly went home and didn’t say a word.

It was about that same time Widow Murphy started growing peppers. She told all the neighbors they would be the tastiest peppers they had ever eaten but they needed to wait until they were ripe. You see, these were VERY special peppers from Uruguay. The Widow told them -if these Uruguay peppers were picked from the vine to soon or eaten before they were ripe- they could burn a hole right through the roof of your mouth or worse!

Of course Herbert overheard all and didn’t believe a thing that crazy old Widow said. He was going to get her peppers before she had a chance to harvest them and that was all there was to it.

We don’t know exactly what happened. It seemed too calm in the neighborhood, but a couple weeks later, it sounded like an tornado hit! One of the neighbors actually witnessed the explosion and swears that he saw Herbert rocket straight up out of the roof of his house! He said the strangest thing was that Herbert was holding a handful of Widow Murphy’s peppers!

Herbert was never seen again but all the neighbors say he probably moved to Uruguay.

What Dreams May Come & Did you know?

This is my submission for Theme 45, “What Dreams May Come” on The Artist Challenge.

I debated long and hard on my concept for this theme and finally decided to take on the master of all dreamers ‘Dorothy of Oz’ as we know the story from the 1939 movie with Judy Garland. I say ‘as we know’ because the ‘Wizard of Oz’ tale that we grew up with has little semblance to author L. Frank Baum’s original story.

First I should tell you, Dorothy and all the characters of Oz were originally created/illustrated by William Wallace Denslow in 1900 for the first edition of the published book. He was a close friend of L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wonderful World of Oz. They held joint copyright on the book.

Although Movie retained most of the important facets of the book - there were some details that were completely changed not only with the characters but storyline.

This is one example: You know those Ruby slippers? NOT! Baum clearly states Dorothy’s had silver shoes. MGM wanted bold Technicolor details!

And what about Toto? The author tells us Toto was a little black dog that could fit in Dorothy’s basket. He was just a little farm dog and most likely a mix breed. MGM used several long haired Champion Show Cairn Terriers of various colors to play Dorothy’s dog throughout the movie. (In the movie - Toto is ever changing in size and from brown to black.)

But HERE’S A BIG ONE- in Baum’s book Oz was not a dream that Dorothy had while ‘ill.’ Oz was a real place! Dorothy would return to Oz in the author's later Oz books. In fact, the Emerald City would provide a refuge for Aunt Em and Uncle Henry when unable to pay the mortgage on the new house that was built after the old one was carried away by the tornado.

I knooow? Kind of makes you think that L.F Baum had some psychic vision in regard to our 2011 mortgage lender issues.

‘Dorothy of Oz’ was an interesting subject to research and great fun to paint. Although I created a Judy Garland-like character, I attempted to paint Dorothy and Toto as Master Illustrator Winslow, L. Frank Baum’s intended their character’ s to be.

The Keeper of Hearts Flower Shop & One True Love

Mary walked by the fountain in her flower shop. At the top was a beautiful enamel plaque of two embracing cherubs. At the bottom the words, “One true love.”

She had taken over the shop when her mother retired and she never forgot the day her mother left. She handed Mary the keys to her business and told her, “Now you are The Keeper of Hearts‘.

Today was Valentine’s Day and men raced in and out of the shop every minute. They anxiously bought roses for the one they loved. Their faces glowed with happiness as they came to Mary’s counter and they all thanked her for their flowers.

One man abruptly appeared at her counter. He seemed angry and demanded her immediate attention. As he placed his order he was screaming at someone on his cell phone, but, in the process, he ordered a dozen red roses for 4 different women.

She handed the man cards to go with the flowers. On the first card he wrote, ‘Dear Sharon, You are the love of my life. Be my Valentine.’ Then, on the other three cards, he wrote the exact same message with 3 different woman’s names.

Mary found this odd. One card was clearly for his wife but the others…? She asked the man if the other flowers were for his daughters or sisters. He abrasively told her it was none of her business and thrust his credit card towards her.

She finished up his order and told him all the flowers and his ‘messages of love’ would be delivered before 6 p.m. that evening. Without so much as a thank you, the man turned to leave. He hooked his foot on the base of the cherub fountain, and stumbled on to the floor. He picked himself up, sneered at Mary then slammed through the door of the flower shop.

The following day the angry man returned to the shop. He screamed “You’ve ruined my life!”

Some how the cards addressed to the 4 women had been mixed up. Each women had received a ’message of love’ meant for the other.

Mary knew she hadn’t mixed up the cards. She would never make that kind of mistake All she could do is apologized to the man. He turned to leave and yet again hooked his foot on the base of the cherub fountain. He picked himself up and left muttering scathing things.

Mary looked towards the cherubs on the top of the fountain and smiled. She was now truly The Keeper of Hearts.

"My Dear Holmes"

He was still, as ever, deeply attracted by the study of crime and occupied his immense faculties and extraordinary power of observation in following out those clues, and clearing up those mysteries which had been abandoned as hopeless by the official police.”

This is my latest work- ‘Sherlock Holmes’. He’s done in the burnt umber minimum palette of my ‘Master’s Series’ and he’s already sold. He was a commission for a customer who wanted a companion piece for another work he’d purchased.

Now here’s an interesting thing I’d like to tell you about. In doing the portraits for my Masters Series I research each subject. Its essential for me to really get a handle on who they were in order to define how best to portray them. My key to finding Sherlock on my canvas was in researching his creator, author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

All Sherlock Holmes fans know that Doyle based Sherlock on a real man by the name of Dr. Joseph Bell, Professor at the University of Edinburgh Medical School (where Doyle himself attended.) According to a history researcher by the name of Weiland Kaligaro, this is a description of Bell…and a real interesting note to boot:
In regards to Dr. Joseph Bell-
He was a pompous know-it-all. He had a raspy voice and beaky nose. He loved to torture his students and make them feel stupid. He was famous for his powers of observation and deduction. He believed patients were often misdiagnosed because doctors didn't pay attention to the little details. He was knowledgeable about many different subjects. He started the first Scottish training program for nurses.. It has been suggested that Bell and his student Arthur Conan Doyle were the real-life Holmes and Watson. Rumor has it Bell figured out who Jack the Ripper was, and helped Scotland Yard stop his murdering spree (even though the killer's identity was never made public).

Interesting, huh? Here’s another question for you: Do you think Sherlock could a be a contemporary in 2011 we would hate-to -love today? (and yes I turned that around intentionally) Well lets consider the TV show ‘House’ on Fox Television and the character Hugh Laurie plays. Have you ever wondered who Dr. House is based on?

Dan set out for his walk that morning with his dog. Although they went down the very same streets every day, he scrutinized his surroundings in a way he’d never done. He became keenly aware that every empty space was filled. Every street was crammed with stores, buildings, new structures and old. There were so many people from every walk of life. Voices, languages, sounds and smells encroached on every minute of every day.

He thought about his commission from the mayor. He was to do an art sculpture representing their society/neighborhood. ’Something simple’ the Mayor said, ’Something to make people feel good and appreciate where we live..’ Dan smiled as he looked around. It was at that moment he knew exactly what he was going to do.

He went to every home, apartment and store and asked people to contribute a chair and all willingly did. Over a period of month he filled an alley way with thousand and thousands of chairs. As neighborhood watched Dan and his crew work they became quite concerned. Was this going to be a negative comment ; another crazy artist making an assault on their way of life? What did it mean?

When he was done, everyone in the neighborhood gathered around. Chairs of every color, size and style joined together in a great structure of organized chaos reaching from the ground to heaven. Nail, rope nor glue was necessary to hold the structure together. Bigger stronger chairs cradled the weaker ones, each a ward of the next and dependant on their connection for stability and existence within the structure. The chairs were a chain of their own balance and the structure was sound and united.

Everyone stood in silent awe. There was oddly something so grand and wonderful about this imposing chair collection. Suddenly great applause rang out from the crowd.

A small plaque was placed in front of the structure. It simply read, “Its all in the way you choose to look at life.”

Restoration of a Heart - Sun Art 2011

From Arthur Chatterly to the Unknown Artist- January 1939

Dear Sir,
I wanted to tell you one of your sculptures lives in my garden and has for many years now. It resides amongst the flowers. The somber face of the sculpture reflects the sun in the morning in an ethereal expression that gives me great comfort.

As to how I acquired your art.. is a bit of an odd story. Years ago I saw Christmas wrappings glint near the edge of my courtyard. Someone had tossed something over the locked gate onto the stones. The package was heavy and wet from the rain. As I picked it up, I could feel pieces tumbling within. Opening the paper, huge chucks of shattered plaster fell from my hands to the ground. I didn’t know where it had come from, but assumed it was meant for me.

I know what you’re thinking: Why would anyone throw a delicate sculpture like this on to a stone patio? Didn’t they know it would break or did they just not care? Was this an intentional act or just careless stupidity?

At this stage in my life I had given up trying to understand the nature of man. Doing mean and horrible deeds seemed inherit with so many who claim themselves righteous Christians. In truth, as I looked at the broken pieces of plaster, I felt like I was holding my own shattered heart in my hands never to be restored. At that moment, it seemed a testimonial of humanity’s hostile arrogance of the blessings that God graces upon us.

I gathered it up and placed it in garbage. The remains of the little sculpted face looked back up at me almost pleading. I thought far too much damage to be repaired and I refused to be party to the lunatic that had done this preposterous act.

All evening I heard something tantamount to a sighing coming from courtyard. I took the lantern and looked but nothing was there. I found myself turning to the garbage cans and wondering if it could possibly be the broken sculpture calling out..‘Help me. I am an innocent victim of a fool. ‘

I laughed at my absurd fantasy, yet the thought of the sculpture lying in the bottom of the garbage can stayed with me. You see, I’m an artist also and do find myself escaping to fantasy in my work. Our art is the true labor of love and carries with it a part our soul and it was that knowledge that brought me to tears. Although I had no clue as to who the artist was that created this sculpture, the fact that this should be its end was more than I could bear.

In the morning I retrieved it from the trash. I placed it on my table and attempted to restore it with great determination. It took me days. Some pieces were so small they couldn’t be salvaged and the cracks will always be evident, but there it was- like Phoenix rising from the ashes. There was the face you created looking back at me with such loving grateful spirit.…
And that’s pretty much the end of the tale until today.

The reason I write you now is that I decided to immortalize your sculpture in a painting simply called ‘The Garden Artist’. I do prey I did your work justice. Regardless of way the work came to me, I’m glad for its arrival. Your sculpture reminds me everyday that there's still good in God’s world. You just have to listen really carefully for the sighs and salvage what you find.

I have a funny admission that relates to my story: Post my divorce from the ‘North’ person, I was in the process of throwing out anything that belonged to him. Rule Number 1: Remove all reminders! I tossed this beautiful little Asian bowl in the trash. I swear I heard this inanimate object say, “Don’t throw me away! I can’t help that the jerk owned me first. I’m yours now! “ I took it out of the trash and put it back in my cupboard.. I know. Creative mind run wild!

The jpg is the actual garden art piece I based my painting on. And yes it came to me in shattered chucks. lol

Even people we love are only on loan

As a rule of thumb, I don’t post personal stories or information on this blog. My stories are purely fiction and done to entertain and market my paintings only. But- I needed to write this, if only for myself. It’s short and I ask you bear with me.

The Holidays were especially sad for me this year. My sister Kerry un-expectantly died on November 13th. I had just published our last Challenge gallery for 2010 and was busy finalizing our Sun Art Calendar.

The strange thing is that I think as we grow older we’re prepared for grandparents, aunts, uncles, even our parents leaving us…but loosing a sister or brother is not something that’s suppose to be part of the story. Our siblings are a landmark on this planet that tell us we are part of family; that we’re not alone. Even if we don’t see them frequently, just knowing they’re there is important.

Kerry was only 4 years older than I and my only sibling. I’m still in a bit of shock that she died but I know life will go on as it should and always does. The thing that comes to mind is that we’re all on borrowed time with each other.

I did a painting in 2008 that I called ‘Life Recycled’. I wrote this (below) to go with it. Its kind of a sad message but I think it’s real important also. It keeps going through my thoughts:

“Everything in life is temporary. There’s no forever.
Even people we love are only on loan.
I salvage what is left. I reclaim my ability to function.
I reuse my capacity to care again.
It is my choice and I choose to recycle.
I choose to enjoy every day of my life. "

Call your sisters or brothers. Talk about everything and nothing. Most important- enjoy your life every day.

The Bad Memory Removal Clinic

Melissa watched the little gold fish swim around in circles in its fishbowl. She was so happy to finally be getting rid of all her emotional baggage.

This clinic used a form of ‘applied amnesia’ that could specifically target memories she no longer wanted. The abusive father, tormenting high school bullies and horrendous first marriage and divorce would alas be cleansed from her consciousness. She would go into her second marriage with Paul happy and free of memories that continued to torment and shade her life.

The brochure said that removal of the memories would be permanent and she was certainly ready for that! Life would be so much better!

The nurse came in and gave Melissa a legal agreement to sign. She insisted that she read it thoroughly. The agreement stated:

The above signed individual accepts and agrees to this procedure under the following conditions: Emotional ties, sensitivities and perception will change radically with the ‘Bad Memory Removal’ procedure. In some cases, relationships end as the cognitive structure and identity of the patient is changed with the removal of certain life experiences. The Clinic is in no way responsible or liable for the consequences of ‘Bad Memory Removal.’

Melissa looked up and again watched the little gold fish swim around in the fishbowl. She thought about her work in Social Services with abused children and how gratifying it was. She thought about Paul and how much she loves him. They both experienced brutal divorces; both understood how fragile a marriage can be and knew they’d have to work to keep their marriage strong.

Melissa looked at the little gold fish swim around in the fishbowl one last time. She smiled, picked up her purse and left the clinic with all her precious baggage.

I was a tree once. I was wild and free and lived in the open forest. My leaves sang in the wind. The rain cleansed me. I watched the sky turn from night to day and centuries pass. Many birds came to sit with me. I held their nests securely and watched their young take flight. I was beautiful and happy to be in this world. I was happy to be of service.

I was cut from my roots and taken to a carpenter in 1942. My wood was a finely sculpted with a delicate design. My seat was made of pale woven wicker. I was beautiful and a welcome part of a family. I set at dinner tables, in parlors, and bedrooms. I listened to stories, truths, tears and laughter. I held each of them with every fiber of my structure. I was happy to be in this world. I was happy to be of service.

There were 3 others like me and a large round table. Each disappeared one by one. Only I remain now. I have been repainted and repaired many times. My legs have grown weak and my paint has pealed. The wicker of my seat has decayed and fallen away. A flowerpot is put in its place. I have been sent to the open and wild again.

I feel the rain cleanse me. I watch the sky turn from night to day. Many birds come to sit with me. The flowers in my pot sing in the wind. I am beautiful and a welcome part of the garden. I am happy to be in this world. I am happy to be of service.

I am swamped at this time of the year as I’m sure you are also. This is a rerun of one of my favorite short blog tales. This little blue chair actually resided in a neighbor’s garden. The chair is the sort of thing one might normally just walk by but for some reason I was taken in by it from the moment I saw it. I did the painting in 2005 and kept it for myself. It’s an acrylic painting on a 12”x 24” stretched canvas.

"Limiting Ones Blessings" or The FRONTIER TRIBUTE CLARION:

October 30, 1873
Madam James Patterson, 25 years of age, stated that Sunday evening she heard a ruckus on her property. She went to the door with her rifle and saw what she described as a no-good mangy intoxicated coyote walking around on two feet singing cowboy songs and making obscene gestures towards her person. For fear of her very life and the lives of her eight children she shot and killed the threatening coyote before it could enter her home and assault her or worse.

To her anguish she discovered the coyote was actually her dear husband. Mr. Patterson. Service will be held on Monday morning at the Saloon, James Patterson’s favorite meeting place. No investigation will be done in that this was clearly a tragic accident.

Widow Patterson is one of the ladies leading the referendum to legalize the distribution of birth control information , a direct violation of the Comstock Laws in the Great Territory of Okalahoma.

It’s true! Not my story but The Comstock Laws of that era even prevented publications of any information in regards to Birth Control. It was considered pornographic. Sending it through the mail (which was their primary means of education/communication) could result in arrest. Information was only shared woman to woman and I should image my story isn't to far off from the desires of women of that day. to resolve their 'birth control issues.'

In 1873 Mary Walker, a missionary’s wife wrote: I find my children occupy much of my time. I guess I should be reconciled to such an allotment.”

The Secret Window & Things Forgotten

Everyday walking home from work Tom looked at the window on Miss Martha’s house. It had a busted pane and every time he walked by he remembered as a child he had thrown the rock that broke it. He couldn’t have been more than 6 or 7 years old when he did it but the shame of his childish act was present every time he looked at that old window. The odd thing was that 45 years later that broken pane of glass still remained precariously hanging in its frame just like the day he broke it.

This day would be different. Tom went over to the window and carefully raised it. He yelled out, “Miss Martha- I going to fix this window!” He heard her odd little voice chirp back, “About time! Thanks Tom.”

When he got home he gathered his tool box, a pane of glass and some wood he had in the shed and returned to Martha’s house. When he got there he just went about the business of repairing the window. Then he gathered up his tools and stuck his head back through the window and yelled out to Miss Martha that he had finished.

Martha yelled back, “Good. Come on in Tom and have some tea. Be sure and take your shoes off. Don’t want anymore dust in this house.”

Tom did as instructed and met Martha in her kitchen who was already preparing their tea. He asked her why she’d never had that old window repaired in all these years. Martha told him, “ I knew you’d come by one day. That old window sure holds it share of secrets . You know, Tom, I think that old window is trying to tell us - that some things can’t be repaired. Damage is done. No matter how many times you walked by and looked at that old window it still has a busted pane, didn’t it? Waste of time to bother thinking about it. The only remedy we really have is how we choose to look at old windows. “

Tom looked at her perplexed and said, “Miss Martha that’s ridiculous. Don’t tell me you’ve gone batty?’

Miss Martha just giggled and told him it was nice to see him again. She said, “Tom, you were always my favorite of all those bratty little boys.”

Tom gathered his tools on the porch and started on his way home. He turned to look at Miss Martha’s newly repaired window and stood frozen. The broken window pane was back in its place. He ran back to Martha’s front door and threw it open without knocking.

Nothing but quiet and dust moved. The house had been left abandoned for many years since Miss Martha passed away.

Tom stood and looked around the empty room. He eyes welled up with tears, he smiled and said, “Thank you, Miss Martha.’

The Worst Day Ever & Restless

This was worst day ever! This was the last straw! His whole day had been this way. Everything that could go wrong -did! First his mother was angry with him because he had forgotten to take out the trash. When they got up that morning ants were trailing up to the trash can. Then he blew his math test. He saw his teacher give him that look and he was sure his already angry Mom would have heard about it by the time he got home. And his baseball practice had been canceled!

After the way his day had gone, he really needed this. This was the one thing he could depend on. An hour had passed and his butt was getting sore sitting here. This was the appointed arrival time! Where was he?

What is a guy to do? He tried his best today but everything just took a left turn. He couldn’t sit here much longer or he’d just be in more trouble with Mom. But this is always where the guy comes and he comes at exactly 3pm. Why isn’t here?!? This was worst day ever!

Then he heard it. The ice cream truck announced its arrival with its usual musical flair. He ordered his chocolate cone. He told the driver he’d been waiting for an hour! What’s up with that? The man just smiled, shrugged his shoulders and drove away.

He planned to walk home really slowly and enjoy every lick of his ice cream cone. Suddenly he tripped over his own shoe lace and watched his cone fly high in the air to meet its end. Of course this would happen! Why did he think otherwise? What a perfect ending to the worst day ever!

Although a futile effort, he thrust his hand out attempting to catch his chocolate cone as it spun like an acrobat in flight. When he caught it with little disturbance to the ice cream he just stood and stared at it. It was a miracle! It was perfect! How lucky was that?! The one thing he could always depend on to make him happy was firmly in his grasp! Wow! This was the best day ever!

Re-run - ‘Reflections in a Mirror’

Entering the interior, Stan took off his expensive suit jacket so as to not wrinkle it. He hung it over the back of the chair. He brushed off his slacks and brought the cuff of his sleeve up. He could see his gold cuff links twinkle in the light. His cuff links alone cost more than anything those people would ever have. He hoped he’d locked the Mercedes. God only knows what kind of riff raff was out there.

Sitting down in the chair he noticed his own image reflected from a mirror hung on the wall in front of him. The mirror must be warped. He looked twisted and ridiculous. He thought about how handsome he was. There are so many ugly people in this world.

He also thought about how brilliant he was and how brilliant his plan had been. How did they find out? Must have been a lucky fluke. He deserved better and couldn’t believe they had gone to these measures. They were jealous and threatened by him. He didn’t care. They weren’t worth his time.

When he had his opportunity, he’d be able to turn it around. They’d believe anything he said. After all, none of them were a match for him. He could manipulate this situation to his favor.. They’ll be jumping at the chance just to talk to him. How dare they screw with him!

He had built every inch of his world. He was in control and no one would take that away. He just had to remember to not let them shake him. He didn’t have to tell them anything! They should feel privileged just to be in his presence! In fact, when this is over he’d take them all down! Every last one of them! If it was the last thing he…..

The sharp clang made Stan look around. The Jailor slammed the bars shut and locked it. He looked at Stan sitting in the cell and left.

Stan looked back at his reflection. There had to something wrong with that mirror.

I know. A real narcissistic creep huh? Unfortunately we’ve all known Stan at one time or another.

Recently, I haven’t had the time to write stories. The Challenge and Inferno can be pretty demanding some months but I love every minute of it.

This story was originally written May/09. I chose to re- run it because this silly tale got some notice. A news website found it and asked to publish it in their online magazine/arts section last year.

Again! I knooow! I’m artist by trade and a writer by my own amusement. I was stunned and most flattered. My stimulus for the story was pretty simple: “We all love getting the bad guy!”

The painting is one that I did as my Challenge submissions for the “Behind Closed Doors” gallery last year. It’s called ‘The Price of Success’, 16” x 20” Acrylic on Canvas Panel. What I Did on Wednesday

I’ve enjoyed sewing, embroidery and crochet for as far back as I can remember. My Mom taught me when I was pretty little. One of the things that every seamstress understands is the investment we make in specialty needles. This little box is the perfect place to keep your needles safe, organized and separated from the rest of your sewing supplies.

It has an attached pin cushion that I framed in detailed wood trim. (BTW- the felt on the pin cushion is the same color/felt as the interior It's just the jpg. I was more focused on showing a good image of the panting) It’s only 1 ½” tall when it’s closed and fits easily in any sewing basket. I’m pricing it at $42.50 for the Holidays. This little box is just cute by any definition. Bright red wild flower against a painterly blue background graces the top of the dark mahogany wood . The box has a slide off lid and the interior is lined in pretty blue felt. I’m giving this one a Special Price of only $37.50 for the Holidays.

Carmen Miranda 1909- 1955 - Wild Thing

We know her as the Chiquita Banana Lady but her name was Carmen Miranda. Hollywood called her the ‘Brazilian Bombshell‘. (She was actually Portuguese born.) She was a Samba singer, Broadway actress and Hollywood film star in the 1940s and 1950s. Carmen’s platform sandals, towering headdresses and indisputable talent were the wildest thing Hollywood had ever seen.

Along with numerous movie rolls and the opportunities to work with the biggest stars of the day, her fame and fortune came quickly. She was even invited to meet FDR in the White House. According to the IRS, in 1946 Carmen Miranda was Hollywood's highest-paid entertainer. Unfortunately it was just about that time that her life started to take a turn in the wrong direction.

In 1947 she married an unsuccessful film producer, David Sebastian. He had married her for her money and shortly after their marriage David announced he would be Carmen’s manager. As these things go, he made many bad business decisions damaging what would have been a promising long career.

David was also a heavy drinker and Carmen followed in his wake drinking and using drugs. She became pregnant, miscarried and David walked out on her. A devout Catholic, the divorce was not something Carmen could ever except.

The toll of drugs and alcohol on Carmen’s body lead to her death. In 1955 she did a guest spot on The Jimmy Durante Show. She collapsed in front of a live audience with a minor heart attack. (no one realized it was her heart at the time) Jimmy stopped the show, helped her find her footing and the show went on. When she returned to her Beverly Hills home that evening, she had a second massive heart attack. She was 46 years old when she died.

Carmen only made a total of fourteen Hollywood films during her entire career but her legacy lives on. We still know and very much love the dancing and singing Chiquita Banana lady.

Did you know that Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be our National Symbol? Thank God our founding fathers blew that idea out of the water.

The beautiful Bald Eagle is our National Symbol. Of course, he isn’t really bald. He’s given his name from the white feathered head. He is a huge bird, with a body length of 28–40 in, 15 to 20 lbs and a wingspan between 5’ to 8’. (I knoooow!)

He was near extinction just a few years back. Not anymore. Like what he stands for- he came back and is flourishing. Bald Eagles can be found coast to coast in the U.S. His habitat is Florida, California and even Alaska. He’s a fisherman and also enjoys small red meat delicacies like rodents and rabbits. And check out the little pix below. Baby Baldies and oh so cute! My painting is called ‘The American’ and it is 12”x16” on flat canvas panel. Lúchorpáin

They are known by many names: fairy, pigmy, sprite, and the far darrig. The most common calling is the Little People or Leprechaun. I know them as my father and grandfather knew them. They are the Lúchorpáin. The folklore of their existence goes back to the druids and a time when Ireland began.

Few believe in their existence but I believe and what I’m about to tell you is true. They are a creature time has forgot. I saw one as a boy 67 years ago. In that split second of gazing on this amazing thing, my life was set on a course of obsession that no one could have predicted. I became a seeker. Lúchorpáin became the belief that possessed my mind and soul.

Contrary to mythology and many a tale, they do not wear green suits, pointed hats or buckled shoes…but you would certainly know- if you saw one too. They say to catch one will definitely bring a fortune beyond your wildest understanding.

There are many hunters today. They come with dogs, cameras and electronic equipment. They spend the nights thrashing through the forest, stomping and screaming out as if they‘re hunting rabbits.

That is not the way to find Lúchorpáin and their efforts are never to any avail. You see, they are not real believers, as I am. Every one calls me a fool but I know of the Lúchorpáin.

They are nocturnal . You have to sit very quietly and watch the grasses for the slightest movement at night. Any quick motion will drive them back into the forest. It takes years and patience.

But I wont dilly dally any longer. I will tell you, my recollection of this very morning. Tears come to my eyes just thinking about it now. I so feared my drean would not be fulfilled before my last breath and I would go to my grave never able to reclaim the site of this magnificient creature I had witnessed so long ago.

As I stated, what I am about to tell you is the truth and in every way my greatest legacy. It was just before dawn. The forest was still dark and thick with dew. I had fallen to sleep during the night . Upon waking- I gathered myself to go home. I heard the smallest sigh near the very spot on the grass where I had been sitting. It was like a breath or a whisper. I knew the sound.

I carefully pushed a fern aside and there she lay sleeping so soundly. She was so small I could have fit her in the palm of my hand. She was far more beautiful than I remembered. Her eyes fluttered then opened. She just looked up at me and smiled ...a knowing smile. She knew how desperately I sought to see her ...just one more time.

‘So what did I do?’ I put the fern leaf back to its resting place and then I went on my way.

Scary, huh? Belief can be dangerous. We know this from history: Nazi Germany, Salem Witch Trials, and lets not forget the bizarre suicide cults in Jamestown and San Diego. There are countless examples. Beliefs can drive you insane and even cause physical illness . There’s irrational phobias, hypochondria, obsessions and a myriad of maladies. A hypnotist will even tell you suggestion can make us ’believe’. But considering all that, belief can also soften a heart and allow us to be forgiving. It can enrich our minds, give us strength and make us reach further. Belief can save our lives.

When Everything Changed

I heard it before I saw it and I knew that nothing would be the same. The entire world was going to change. I questioned whether we would be for the better for it. What kind of a future would it bring us? Would it save lives? Would it provide food to the needy or help the desperate. Would it aid our process of living? Would it make our world a better place?

The dye had been cast and there was no undoing what was before my eyes. I took Rosy to barn yard and released her. She looked back at me as I closed the gate. She knew her world had just changed also.

I walked through the cloud of dust on the road. The man smiled and offered me his hand. I thanked him. I got into my new Tin Lizzie. I was ready for my first driving lesson.

I just finished this repurposed humidor yesterday. This is the first box I’ve done specifically for a man and is one of my favorites. It’s a heavy wood. The panels are ½” thick and it’s left in a natural smooth finish. The interior is lined in a crème colored felt and the top interior lid retains the original manufacturers design. It makes the perfect box for the top of his bureau.

My painting on the lid is done in acrylics with a Dammar finish. It’s of a (1908- 1927) Model-T Ford, also known as the Tin Lizzie.

It’s difficult to buy for men. This is sure to be a big hit and life time keepsake. This wood box is original art so there’s only one like it. ADOPTED CHILD and IMPERFECT

Cindy was of African American heritage being raised by the white parents that had adopted her. She couldn’t remember her real mother and father. She was only 3 days old when she became a member of this ‘Caucasian’ family. Now 13- she found herself growing resentful. She wondered about her real origins and didn‘t like being the ‘different’ one.

Looking at their family pictures , her black face stuck out like a sore thumb. Her friends were always surprised to find out her parents and siblings were white and when any guest came to visit, they always inquired about this third ‘black’ child!

She was sick of it!! Her parents told her that when she was 18, and ready to strike out on her own, they would help her find her origins. For now her focus needed to be on school and there life together.

She loved her parents but wondered why they had opted to adopt a black child anyway. Didn’t they know how confusing her life was going to be??!

She went out to the backyard to mull this all over. As she walked around she saw something bright red on the ground. It was dead Robin! Beside the dead bird lay her broken nest and one blue egg.

Cindy remembered from her science classes to never touch a nesting egg. The mother bird wouldn’t return if she picked up a human scent, -but this mother would never return anyway! The Robin was dead.

Frantic, Cindy’s mind raced as she looked at the poor abandoned egg. She remembered a Dove had laid eggs in a basket on their patio! This might work! She ran into the house and got a clean cloth. Racing back to the yard, she carefully lifted the little blue egg and carried it to the patio nest and even more carefully placed it with the other to eggs.

Telling her Mom what she had done, her Mother warned her it might not work; there was sure to be confusion when the Mother Dove returned to her nest. Cindy became quite agitated and insisted it would! She explained it was certainly worth a try. The little Robin egg deserved a shot at life, didn‘t he? If the Mother Dove adopted the egg- he’d at least have a chance!

So Cindy set by the window waiting for the Mother Dove to return.

How did it turn out, you ask?

All I can tell you is that a couple weeks later, three baby birds took flight from that patio nest. One was red.

I hang wicker baskets on my patio for the Mourning Doves. In the Spring they build nests in the them. Thus the stimulus for this painting.

Latest Repurposed Humidors or Wasn‘t it just Monday Yesterday?

The Challenge and Inferno can be pretty time consuming some months. That's certainly a good thing, so I have no complaints, but I’ve had no time to write stories for my blog. I thought I’d at least show some of the things I’ve been working on the past few days.

This little Daisy Paint Box was just finished yesterday. I desperately needed to get out of this subtle color tone mode I’ve been working in lately and into some bold colors. After finishing the painting on the lid, something didn’t look right. My bold colored daisies didn’t tie into the box as the others had so easily. So I spattered color down the sides and back and that brought the cohesion that I needed. THIS BOX IS SOLD

This is the first ‘canvas print’ humidor. The idea behind it is to be able to provide a product at a more modest price than we can sell the original hand painted humidors. BUT understand- the print tops still fall under the definition of being ‘originals’. Although it is a print, there’s only one repurposed humidor like it available and it is completely hand tailored.

With this one, I created a print of ’Grape Vine Sun,’ my entry for the 2010 CBS Sunday Morning Collection. Putting the canvas on top of the box left me with the issue of ‘edges of the canvas showing‘. I found a tiny braided wood trim that made the perfect frame and resolved that problem. I also found a gold grape leaf charm and couldn’t resist adding it to the box.

Last - I also did these little Pansy paintings on 2 ½” square canvases. (Painting these made me go blind in one eye!) I’m selling them with their little easels for only $24.50.

REWRITE & GONE WITH THE WIND

Rhett Butler- “Scarlet O’Hara would you marry me?”

Scarlet- “No way, Rhett. I’m only in my 20’s. I want to have a career, life and travel the world!”

Rhett Butler- “Quite frankly my dear, I could give a damn.”

Scarlet- “I know, Rhett, and that’s exactly the problem- you chauvinist pig! I could give a damn about you, too! I‘m going to find someone much better than you! By the way you have Dumbo ears. Can you fly with those things?”

I knooow. How irreverent can I be?

“Gone with the Wind” is an American classic tale in which a manipulative woman and a roguish man carry on a turbulent love affair in the American south during the Civil War.

Wrong! We girls know that “Gone with the wind” is really about the hoop skirts! I think they should have a come back! They’d sure see us coming and going in the grocery store.

I couldn’t resist doing my rendition of Scarlet in her hoop skirt. I worked from a tiny jpg I found online where her features were barely visible - so a bit of ad-libbing apparent. (I think this photo was probably for a 1939 press release on the movie because of the way she‘s posed. )

I never like to talk about ‘how I paint’. I think its boring to most people but I would like to say one thing about executing this piece. When artists look at their subjects there’s always one thing that stands out - takes precedence in a composition. Obviously with Scarlet it’s her hoop dress. So I highlighted the lower part of the skirt so it balloons out of the picture plane and infers the hidden hoop beneath and under. But there was one element that was even more important. Her arm holds her hanky and presses against her side and into her skirt. Her arm actually interrupts and defines the way the fabric needs to hang to be believable and the hoop under structure. It a pushes the top of the hoop up beyond what loose fabric would perk up. So in doing this painting- her arm had to be a main focus for the composition to work . Interesting? Not really! Okay - enough about that. (Promise I wont do it again. lol) The Painting is simply called “Scarlet.“ It’s acrylic on a 16”x20” gallery wrap canvas. The Still Life or Lamp Shades and Milk Pitchers

Don’t have a story for you this week, although I have a good one in the works for the upcoming week.

These two paintings are my submissions for our latest Artist Challenge Theme- Gallery 34 “THE STILL LIFE”.

My stimulation for these two works- I love to visit antique stores. One of the things that always draws my attention is the paintings that are hung behind all the mahogany furniture. Most of them are in those God awful gold ornate (always dusty) frames. But, it is the work that I notice. Most of the paintings in your typical antique shop date from about the 1920’s to 40’s. They all have a feel about ‘their time’ and the artist’s of that era.

As my best buddy describes it -’there’s an atmosphere about them.’ They’re usually rich and traditional in styling but there’s also a softness about them that I find so intriguing. That was my quest with these two works. They remind me of paintings my grandmother or elderly aunts might have had in their homes near their dining room tables. Of course- hold on to your skirt! You know I just couldn't resist also putting my own twist on them …so

She Couldn’t Help It & EMBRACE

“As a kid I took care of my mother, ...she didn't like me… she didn't mean to be that way...she couldn't help it".
Clara Bow-

A lot people asked her how she did it: How she made it to top and kept on going. She didn’t come from an influential show biz family. She was born in 1905 tenement in Brooklyn, New York. In fact the odds were so stacked against Clara Bow it just leaves you shaking your head.

Her mother was in and out of asylums after being diagnosed with psychosis, paranoia and aggressive behavior. Clara spent her childhood caring for mother and being traumatized. She started working in silent movies as a teenager to support her family. She woke one night with her mother standing over her with a butcher knife at her neck, telling her ‘she’d be better off dead than working in the movies.’

Although she loved her Dad- he was weak man and by all definition a failure. He couldn’t hold a job.

Yet with no personal support, Clara Bow became a super star of the 1920 silent movie era She was the symbol for the first ‘flapper’ and the first ‘It’ girl. In fact- did you know that Clara was the inspiration for the cartoon character ’Betty Boop’? They said her honesty in performance and range was beyond any actress that had come before her. She could go from comedy to drama with ease. She was praised by critics for her beauty, vitality and enthusiasm.

Still- no matter how great her popularity the critics wouldn’t let her forget where and what she came from. Scandalous tabloid stories raged about her sexual behavior, alcohol and drug use. Of course they weren’t true, but the society of 20’s and 30’s insistently called her a low life and in their words “a disgrace to the community.”

So how did she do it? How did she keep on going?

Clara had two choices. She could give up, be angry and unforgiving or she could embrace her life. She chose the latter. What she couldn’t find in her home and family she found in her work. She was famous for rolling those great big eyes and laughing when broached with questions.

“They don’t mean it…they just can’t help themselves.”

Post three failed marriages, Clara spent her retirement at her home in Los Angeles. She died September 27, 1965, age 60, of a heart attack while watching a Gary Cooper movie.

I’m frequently asked if I work from photos of the celebrities. Nope- at least not as you assume. I need a photo for their facial features, but I’m my own model for most of the female and MALE subjects. That way I can pose them however I choose. Broaden the shoulders or neck, add some curve to hips and the human form easily morphs into anyone. In Clara's case there was major embellishment!

Interesting note: Clara’s lipstick. Although she had a ‘ full beautiful mouth’, the studios makeup made her appear as if her lips were perched for a kiss. That was also portrayed in the Betty Boop cartoon.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Villain

‘Cupid is a knavish lad, thus to make poor females MAD? ’

In every story there is a villain; someone or something that creates the trouble. Strange as it may seem, the villain is absolutely necessary for all good storylines. The villain makes the tale interesting and actually creates the adventure. Even in mankind’s very first tale of the Garden of Eden there is the serpent. If you really think about, without the serpent there would be no story at all.

This week’s theme for The Artist Challenge is the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. I chose to paint the character I defined as the true villain, -Helena.

As Shakespeare’s comedy goes- a young couple, Hermia and her lover Lysander, are the central characters of the play. Not true! The devious and sultry Helena is the heart of the play.

Helena is Hermia’s best friend. They’ve been friends since childhood. The man that Helena is love with- “Demetrius“, has been selected as the perfect suitor for another; NONE OTHER than her friend Hermia! Hermia doesn’t even want Demetrius and blatantly rejects him. She runs off with Lysander. Helena DOES want Demetrius and takes matters into her own hands to get him. Thus a comedy of errors and wonderful adventure begins.

Helena would NOT be described as evil, but make no mistake: she is the serpent in this Garden of Eden.

Oh Helena ..You naughty, naughty girl.

In portraying Helena- I decided to make her a brunette, because as we all know brunettes are ALWAYS cast as the bad girl. I also tried to define her as a strong woman, with penetrating eyes and by no means someone you’d want to trifle with.

Portrait of An Artist- Pablo Ruiz Picasso

Dear Mr. Picasso,
My name is Vikki and I’m artist. Of course it’s a bit cheeky on my part to say ’I’m an artist’ to a Master artist, so I do humbly apologize.

One of the things that I like to fathom about you is that there are few artists that live to know they’ve been classified masters in their lifetime. You did.

I remember you in a newsreel when I was young. You had just arrived in New York. White fuss was blowing on top of your bald head as you got off the plane and you waved and smiled to the paparazzi and cameras like you were greeting old friends.

I studied your work when I was college and often wondered what I could gain from you. Again I apologize, but I never got it. I am not an abstractionist nor do I work in minimal line. Please don’t misunderstand. I can well appreciate your work but it was not style that I aspired to.

I remember you talked about the different phases of your work, from your rose period, cubism and on to minimal forms in graphic line. You would work in the style until you felt you had exhausted it and then go on to something else. You talked about this quite frequently and the importance of artist proceeding on this path. ‘Explore all you can.’

This painting is part of a minimal palette series that I’m doing. It’s basically burnt umber with nominal traces of blue and magenta buried in the background. I’m really enjoying stretching myself like this. I’m not allowing the work to be dependant on color to show dimension and form. What I think it does is draw the eyes to focus on the subject (or meaning of the painting) rather than being pulled around the canvas via a myriad of color. There is something to be said with that and I will do it until I‘ve exhausted it.

I think I just contradicted myself? I think I learned a great deal from you.

I prey I did you justice and you’re pleased with the portrait. Thank your for lessons learned Master Picasso, where ever you might be.

Life in Perspective or The Floral

When I was a little girl the fact that I was an artist was defined by my second grade teacher. Although, I must admit I didn't understand at the time. When she asked us to draw a picture of our home, I drew my house on a ¾ angle as I saw it, rather than straight-on frontal view as the other children had done. My teacher was amazed. I was embarassed and actually thought I had done something wrong or peculiar.

When I was in college an instructor took the class out to a huge hay barn at the Cal Poly Equestrian Farm. We were to do a drawing of the barn as ’we saw it.’ I drew an upward perspective -looking up and into the barn with haystacks and interior beams as seen ‘from the ground’ where I set. At the end of the class our work was posted together on a board. The instructor asked the class which drawing best depicted exactly what we all actually saw. Unanimously, my drawing was chosen by the class. The instructor went on and on about my choice. Although flattered, I was also totally embarrassed.

It wasn’t until I took an art history class that covered Impressionist Artist Degas that I acquired an understanding of how and why I approached my subjects like this. Degas became infamous for drawing his ballerina’s from a bird’s eye view, showing tops of heads as one might see looking down on the scene. Degas wasn’t shy and announced to the critics who had admonished him for this odd perspective, “It’s way I see the ballerina’s from the balcony where I’m painting- thus the way they SHOULD be painted! It is beyond human ability to see anything straight on!”

In short it was Degas' brass attempt to tell them 'he was right and they were wrong.'

I was so relieved! If a master saw his world this way, it should be okay for me also. Of course, over the years I have created many subjects straight-on but it is always (and only) for an intended meaning behind the painting. I still love the odd angles of our lives and paint ’em like I see ’em.

I think Degas was right. We do see life in angles and not straight on. And life can only be perceived from our own perspective.

Our theme for the Artist Challenge this month was ‘The Floral’. My online buddy, Photographer and Collage Artist Marianne Kovalinka, had taken a photograph of these little purple crocuses. It actually appears that she just pointed the camera down at her feet as she stood over them. Peculiar perspective? She was certainly talking my language!

“The Gift” and A Mother’s Day Art Card

When I was a little girl I worshiped my Mom. She was so beautiful. I loved to feel her arms around me and the way her hands would stoke my hair. She always got so excited with anything I did or had to tell her. I loved to hear her laugh and wanted to be near her all the time. I was so proud that she was Mother and quite sure that no other Mother could possibly be as wonderful as my Mom was. She told me I was her joy: I was her greatest gift in her life.

When I was teenager I hated my Mom. She always looked at me with a critical eye and there was no one that could hurt me with words like she could. We argued all the time over nothing of importance. I dreaded being around her. She embarrassed me. She was my angst and misery.

When I was grown I realized how amazing and extraordinary she really was inside and out. She was always the first and only one I really wanted to talk to about everything. She made the smallest thing seem like greatest accomplishments. She made me believe I could do anything, over come anything and master everything. She always comforted me and made me feel like I was never alone. I wanted to be around her all the time. I was so proud she was my Mother and knew how lucky I was to have a Mother like her. I loved her more than anyone I would ever love in my life and she made me feel so very loved. She was my joy.

I miss you Momma. You were my greatest gift in life.

Under the Sea & The Paisley Wobbler

The Paisley Wobbler- (Scientific.- locura absurda estúpido)
The Paisley Wobbler is the western form of the Monstervis Absurda that possesses an egg-shaped body, a high dorsal fin and a long quadruple caudal fin. This beautiful neon patterned fish may have either metallic or nacreous scales, telescope eyes and various paisley designs used in ill thought fabric attire and table clothes. It measure from 609.6 to 914 centimeters and weighs close to 2 tons at maturity. It supports double tail fins, instrumental in brushing away life sucking convicted Felon attorneys left in its wake. It is a native of the Galapagos Islands but frequently found following it prey as far north as New Jersey.

Habits- Although a pleasant looking fish, the Paisley Wobbler is carnivorous predator and predominately thrives on a diet of seals, octopus, tourist, surfers, Republicans, 29 year old jerks and ex-husbands.

Poisonous to touch the Paisley Wobbler first blinds its food source with its tasteless paisley design which may results in humorous convulsions. Once the victim has been toyed with, the Paisley fish paralyzes its prey with its venomous tongue. Then it goes in for a slow nibbling kill and consumption.

Caring For- Keeping Paisley Wobblers in an aquarium, hot tub or whirlpool bath is not recommended, especially for children or persons with low IQ.

Bite Prevention- Move to Alaska. Although generally considered a hardy specimen, the Paisley Wobbler can be sensitive to prolonged exposure to low water temperatures. The Paisley Wobbler will not follow and you will be able to see Russia from your house.

CBS Sunday Morning- My Sun Art & Thank You

My painting ‘Abruzzi’ 2008 aired again today (April 18th) on CBS Sunday Morning. It is the 3rd time that Abruzzi has aired on the show. Today it tailed a segment about the Art of Bonsai trees.

It’s always odd how a little painting like this comes about. I had spent the week working out in my garden under the scorching California sun- so the concept was a given. After viewing the show one Sunday morning, sending it to CBS was really an afterthought. It was truly one of those things that you never figure anything will come of.

This little painting has brought my work and website more attention and sales than any painting I’ve done in the past 3 years.
