The Price of Success

Behind the Closed Door’ is premiering at The Artist Challenge Today! Stop by and say hello to the Artist! Art cards of ALL their work are on sale for ONLY $7.

Richard’s partners told him they just loved him. They said he was the best and they so appreciated all he did. They even said he was brilliant and they couldn’t do it without him.

Richard would be at his desk before his partners arrived in the morning and he was always the last to leave. When his partners faltered he would fix everything. You see, to Richard it wasn’t just about working a job. To Richard, it was the price of success.

Now, the only problem was his partners began to depend on Richard and all was not what it seemed. They didn’t even bother doing any work because they knew Richard would pick up the slack. They would snicker and call him ‘an old work horse‘. Even when Richard needed to address matters that concerned the company, their arrogant and pompous salutation was always “Sure! Whatever you want, Richard!”

They relished in the fact they would be getting richer everyday, while Richard did all the work. They didn’t think Richard knew they felt that way…. but he did.

So, Richard just worked that much harder, remembering this was the price of success. His partners didn’t even notice the small photo Richard had taped to the wall of his cubicle. It was grand sailboat with white sales sparkling in the sun. Occasionally you could even find Richard staring at it.

I don’t know what really happened, but one day Richard was gone. They said he just picked up his brief case and said, “I’m done now. Got everything I want!”

When the partners looked at the books, the company was completely broke. There was one last entry that said, “$1, 000, 000 for Richard and a job well done.” Their own handwriting was beside it clearly showing their agreement: “Sure! Whatever you want, Richard!”

So the company closed its doors and that was the last of it.

If you pass by the marina, you may notice a grand sail boat with white sales that sparkle in the sun. On the side of it- the name clearly reads: ‘The Price of Success.’
