The Queen of Ragu or Beyond Boundaries

The Artist Challenge is premiering ’"Beyond Boundaries" Tonight- Oct. 17th in Gallery #19! The Inferno Writers Challenge is totally rocking out! Stop by and see for yourself!

When Margaret Elizabeth showed up for her school photo in a pink tootoo and sword at her side, I have to admit I was a bit taken-back. She strolled into position in front of the photographer and screamed out, “I am the Queen of Ragu!”

I didn’t quite understand at the time, but couldn’t help but laugh. What could it hurt? It was just a school photo and there was something I admired about her Hudspeth. Margaret was an individual who would easily step beyond boundaries and no one could deny it.

Margaret’s parents were artist and they understood the most important thing they could do for her as parents is to allow her imagination to flourish. So, Margaret went through her school years forever surprising all of us with her antics.

By the time her class was in their senior year, most of the kids went on to standard jobs and became part of society. Not Margaret Elizabeth! Post College she joined the Peace Corp. Later she went on to become a screen writer and the last I heard she was running for a Congressional seat. I would wager a bet that Margaret made all her imagined young dreams a reality.

I still teach and occasionally hear from my students but rarely Margaret Elizabeth. Then one day last week I received a package. Inside was the pink tootoo and sword. The note said,
“I have a feeling that you may know a kid that needs this more than I do now. Thanks. -The Queen of Ragu”

I set it down and chuckled for a moment. I know just the kid that needs this.

It is only fear that keeps all of us from dawning a pink tootoo, or the equivalent, and stepping beyond defined boundaries. Yet in truth it is exactly what we all want and need to do at least once in our lives.

great painting and, as usual, a great story to go along with it...and a good reminder not to worry about "looking silly" :)

Hi Marianne,
And thanks. Yes it is strange how we all worry about social judgements -stepping outside of the norm. Yet it's those that do that become exceptional people that we so enjoy and appreciate.

Oh, Vikki. I chuckled at the very sight her in that ballerina outfit with that very long sword. Her facial expression is so endearing and really cute. I still can't get over her in that outfit with that huge sword. LOL.

You sure are very creative. Who could imagine a girl in a tutu with a sword? Only you could come up with something like that, Vikki. This makes you very unique.

I loved the story as well.

You have captured amazing "attitude" in this painting Vikki! I have known (and taught) kids like this and they do seem to be the ones who become the movers and shakers....=]
