Once there was a wind-up toy, a wooden spaceman and yoyo............The first time these toys were ever seen was at an estate sale in 1929. They had belonged to a really old widow. They say she had lived to be 135 years old and longer than any one had ever been known to live! She had led a very lonesome life. All her family and friends were long gone.
Then in 1946 William Dennison was surprised to find the toys on the stoop of his shop one morning. They were in a box with a note that said, “Make a Wish.”
William laughed and took them in his store and looked around. He thought if he had one wish it would be that his store would be wildly successful and that he would be a very wealthy man.
And so it was. But William spent so much time at his successful business that his wife left him and so did his children. In fact, so did all of his friends! He just didn’t have time for anyone. They said that one day, William just walked away from his fortune and went off to the hills. He was never seen again.
In 1952 Mrs. Shirley Taylor had just sent her kids off to school. She dreaded going back into her home. All she did was pick-up and care for her ungrateful family. Those children never did anything for her. Her husband worked day and night to support them and was too tired to even talk to her when he got home. Everyday she would swim in this pool of misery and tears.
It was on this very day that the mailman handed her a box. Inside was the toy trio with a card that said, “Make a Wish.”
Shirley looked at the toys and thought if she had one wish - all she wanted was just to be happy.
And so it was. They found Shirley in the corner of the kitchen laughing hysterically. They said she had lost touch with the world. The had to take to her to ‘funny farm‘. As far as we know, Shirley’s still there and laughing.
Today is June 10, 2009. I found this toy trio in a basket at my front door with a card that said ‘Make a Wish.’ I closed the door and left them outside. You see, I have everything I need.

___________Remember that old saying "Be careful what you wish for. Your wishes many come true." Ever had that experience? Tell me about it.
Oh yes. I’m back in creep-out mode. This little trio of toys were actually given to me in large gift basket from one of my customers. They have their rightful place in a bookcase.
I’ve had a few people ask me how I put together my ideas. This is a photo of my setup- cardboard box with holes for a light source- toys positioned inside. (I know-not very to impressive when you see this).
The stories just come to me. They’re the easy part and just for fun.
My painting is called ‘Toys Past’. It’s Acrylic, 12”x16” and will be priced at $225 (including S&H-USA only). Prints will be available on request.

Needful Things
So many stories have been written over the years about wishing for things and how, when those wishes come true, there is always a downside.
Nicely done, Vikki, nicely done.
Hi Douglas,
Nice to hear from you. All true about wishing tales. They say there are only 7 basic story themes that have ever been told. It’s kind of like 7 different colored crayons. From them come wealth of other shades.
Sorry I haven't visited blogs. Been swamped with The Challenge site. Will stop by soon.

This story freaked me out and the little toys matched up with the eerie message. "Make a Wish" sounds so wonderful, almost too good to be true, because those things in life don't happen. Perfect ending. And even though spookey, loved the painting!
Hi Aleta,
Thanks. It's always nice to hear from you.
And you've got to come to the Challenge -you Jewelry making artist girl! I have another jewelry artist and I think you'd be inspired when you see her work.
We need you positive energy there.

ohh this is great. I love the painting and wow, your stories always leave me wanting more! Send me the box of toys okay, I could use some wishes!! My first wish would be some sunshine since as you know we haven't had much in a long time...well we haven't out here in the Inland empire anyway...
love that painting.
Hi Sandy,
Thanks Sandy. And I agree. sunshine would be my wish also. You know we don't live to far apart. I'm in North County S.D.
June gloom has sure hit us in all it's glory.
Vikki
I love San Diego...not sure if I've been to North county...need to google that.
well duh, of course I've been there..Escondido, fallbrook, etc...is that the area.
yeah we are up the 15 near the foothills above
Rancho cucamonga...
we go to temecula for some good italian food when we are going down the 15.
Hi Sandy,
You're to funny. I'm at the far west edge of the North County near San Marcos. I can see the Pacific from the top of my hill on a 'clear day.'
Vikki
okay, I'm jealous, I only can see Mt Baldy out my back deck...and only the dry side (south facing) part of the mountain....
san marcos Inn.. my sis stayed there years ago and that's all I know about San Marcos...but I bet it's pretty.
Hey Sandy-
I love Mt. Baldy. I used to drive up there near the waterfall and ice house during the winter so my kids would ‘know what snow actually looks like’. On the way down we’d have lunch at the Mr. Baldy Restaurant where they only have 3 things on the menu: Steak, burgers and beer.
I’m just off the 5 between Oceanside and Carlsbad.

The painting is marvelous. and the story ... the story is true. Oh, so, true.
Hi Lou,
Thanks- Absolutely true. I think we've all had situations where we've gotten exactly what we wished for and then regret it.

This is another case of Vikki improving on reality ...
Onyer Vik as we'd say in Ozzieland.
My wish? That I'd had that picture of yours on my nursery wall when I was a babe. Too late now.
Hi June,
Thanks. I love these odd little toys. I had a client who would give baskets at Christmas every year to the people who had worked with him. These toys came in my basket along with a whoopie cushion, lots of bubble gum, noise makers and candy & other bizarre fun stuff. It was very cool.
Vikki
Hi,
It's a wonderful nostalgic painting.
The texture and luminance of the tin is quite convincing.
Best regards,
José
