The National Space Association had waited 50 years to get the funding and clearance to take their first step on the planet. Many land rovers had been sent to investigate, so they had definitive knowledge of the soil, rocks and climate.
No ozone layer protected the planet’s atmosphere. They were entering a world that was 95% carbon dioxide. The surface scorched during the sunlight hours and dropped into artic freezing temperatures at night.
Rover’s photographs indicated the ground's surface was barren and heavily beaten by storms of asteroids and devastating sun flares. DNA-based life was non existent, but rovers drilling found ice in the subterranean layers. Water clearly indicated some life form could have existed at one time.
Now eyes would take in the violent tundra. Feet would hit its surface. They had 24 hours to investigate and gather all they could.
As the astronauts probed over the top of a sandy crater an odd form was visible. The excitement was overwhelming and immediate clearance to investigate was given.
They approached slowing. There were no signs of danger. It was clearly inanimate. It was NOT indigenous to the planet! This was something created, shaped and formed by intelligence!
Exhilaration screamed through the astronauts! Shock surged with the knowledge they were not the first to step on to the surface of the planet! Some species had left this for them to find!
Bold in colors, it was a non-carbon based substance that had withstood time and the elements of this violent world. Immediate supposition led them to think it could be an obelisk to a civilization. The object was dismantled and returned to the ship for the long voyage home.
On June 1st, 2059 the National Space Association revealed the fantastic find to the world. The object was created by alien civilization which had once inhabited the planet. It was left as time capsule before their sudden end came. The name of their planet was chiseled on the side of the object for future generation to mark their signature in the universe.
So from that day forward, the long dead third planet from the sun would be remembered and referred to as “General Motors Truck!”

I know! Freaky huh? Ever think about it? Are you aware we can actually do something to save our ozone layer?
The painting is my submission for Gallery #10, “A Road less Traveled.” I call it ‘Marianne’s Vision. ‘ It’s 16”x20”/ acrylic on un-stretched canvas panel. The original will be priced at $525. Prints will be available upon request. Contact me here.
My blog buddy, Idaho Artist and photographer Marianne Konvalinka had taken a photo of this old rusted truck. She allowed me to paint my version based on her photo.

i think that the painting is better than the photo :)it's always fun to see one's image re- interpreted- i really like it!
Thanks Marianne,
I just posted this and wanted you to be the first to see it.
Check out the gallery 10 at the Challenge- Some of the concepts on a Road Less Challenge are pretty surprising.

THis is truly wonderful! Amazing how you got the shine on the fender and wonderful rust configurations that always fascinate me. I really like this!
Hi Odd Chick,
This was fun to do, but it wasn't an easy one- especially that fender. As I was painting I would have to (constantly) get up and look at it at a distance. The work would be become so abstract when I was right on top of it. Struggle as it may have been, I'm pretty happy with the results.

Vikki, your art is superb, such talent. But, your stories are equally amazing. I've never read many short stories, but WOW - I'm amazed that a whole story can be told in a few paragraphs & you can do it!
This old truck is beautiful - funny thing to say about an old rusty truck!
Hi Beckie,
Thanks for your comment. I find the stories as much fun to write as creating the paintings.
I wanted to write something you'd not expect with an old truck like this. Just a different twist.
And their is no doubt that old truck will survive all of us.

So GM has even polluted unknown planets Vikki! Why am I not surprised - or at least would be if you weren't having a lend of us.
Love your truck - it could be museum material before long ...
June in Oz
Hi June,
Thanks I like that truck too.
And, oh so true about GM. The irony is that we can stop the deterioration of the ozone- but it is only because of 'big dollar interest' on all continents that they don't. It would actually be an easy process. Hmmmmm?
Vikki
AWESOME!! And wonderful write up. Really makes one think about our future! Great great job. I'll have to check out the rest.
Hi Sandy,
Thanks, thanks and thanks.

Hi BLOGtise,
Thanks for you comment sweet lady.

I LOVE the painting and will definitely have to show it to Greg. He has a fondness of old trucks. It's the character in them you just don't find in vehicles these days.
Interesting how it was GMC you picked. Absolutely perfect for this day and age. You cover a lot of material with the painting and the story... as always ~ I am a fan!
I agree with Marianne... Way better than the photo! It looks GORGEOUS! Your work is incredible!
Hi Diane,
Thanks. As artist we tend to romanticize .. or exagerate the facts for the image. Marianne's photography is pretty outstanding in itself.
Vikki
Hi Aleta,
Thanks. I'm a big fan of you and Greg and your whole clan too.
If you and Greg are interested in the painting I'll make you a deal as my blog buddy. And these are my prices on prints-http://www.theredchairgallery.com/special-offers.html
