Auld Lang Syne or The True Meaning

Auld Lang Syne" is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. My question to you is what the heck does it mean? Being of Scotch/Irish heritage, I actually know and felt I should translate what the lyrcist suggest:

" Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind." Toss out the old friends and get new ones! They're just dragging you down! Yes, I know, they've become a staple in your life. Who cares! Forget about 'em!

"Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old times since." Forget all the years you've spent with those people! I hate your friends. Especially that old dude in the skirt! He makes me cringe!

Chorus-

"And surely you’ll buy your pint cup ! And surely I’ll buy mine !" Let's just go get drunk! Bring your credit card. I'm not paying for your booze!

"And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne " I'm quite sure the lyricist suggest we purchase something like 'Old Scotch Whiskey. ' (Undoubtedly his preference.) I personally would go for the apple green martini- but you order what you want.

Chorus-

"We two have run about the slopes, and picked the daisies fine . " Remember when we got good and drunk then went for a little drive in Hollywood Hills? We vandalized the neigbor's garden. I bet they were surprised in the morning! That was fun!"

"But we’ve wandered many a weary foot since auld lang syne. " For years we've stumbled around aimlessly drunk until we couldn't' stand up! Let's do it again."

Chorus-

"We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine " Remember when we went skinny dipping in the public park then order munchies from Dominoes?

"But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne " I've actually had some personal issues with you. Remember that big screaming fight we had? That's why I've refused to talk to you for the past decade.

Chorus-

"And there’s a hand my trusty friend ! And give us a hand o’ thine ! " Here the author suggest the moment when we're handcuffed and arrested for public drunkness.

"And we’ll take a right good-will draught, for auld lang syne." Then we'll finish off the night drying out in jail.

Anyway, thus are the words of this great master and Auld Lang Syne. It's certainly one way to spend New Year's Eve.

Have a happy and fun ' 2009' celebration, but remember the party crowd is on the road. Be safe and treasure ALL your old friends.

Vikki: Sorry for the delay in responding; however, our computer is down and in the shop until after New Year's.

Your picture INSTANTLY made me smile. Just imagine the power of a smile!!!!!

And smile I did, Vikki. It brought back memories of more than a few nights (that I was told of the next day as I sought a hangover remedy). Here's to all those brain cells that passed away as I celebrated my Irish heritage. Now I am of the age where staying awake till midnight on New year's is a greater accomplishment than finding my way home on New Year's Day in my younger years.

A gin and tonic (just one) will probably be my only toast tonight.

Have a Happy New Year, Vikki.

Hi Douglas and thanks,

I'm with you. My party days ended many years ago.... but I remember them well and still wonder how I survived it all.

Tonight I have a New Year's Eve date with David Letterman, some hot chocolate and a pizza. (It's pajama party).

Have a great New Year, Douglas.

Vikki, you are something else!! That is a priceless little piece of writing and love the illustration.

We didn't get out with the partiers last night -- never do that any more! Just home trying to pacify the dogs who are always terrified of the fireworks.

May you have a happy and abundant new year!

(Gonna follow you on Twitter.)

Hi Marsha-
It’s so nice to hear from you and Happy and Prosperous 2009 to you and your gang also.

And thanks. The first thing I saw was your twitter and thought “Well if Martha’s doing it- then I should most certainly do it also!”
The only problem is- I don’t think ’I get it.’ Reginald has repeatedly attempted to explain it to me and I'm still left with - ‘huh?’
Oh, well.

I love the reference to Old Scottish... we spent the evening at my Daughters fiancé's grandparents - serious Scots and sang the song and told old Scottish jokes for the evening and listend ed to Big Ben chime- quite sweet! Beautiful painting!

Hi Epiphany Artist-
Thanks for visiting my blog. I'll check out your's also.

The painting is not my best effort. Just a quick pix for the blog but I thought it fit the bill.

I love the Scottish and their sense of humor. My paternal side is from Scotland and they do love to tell stories. I think it's genetic.

Hi Queeny,
Thanks. You're to funny. I can assure you - I don't want to look under that skirt. God only knows what under there.

There is another reason that this picture grabs me. At first, it reminded me of the William Demerest character, Uncle Charlie, on My Three Sons, but he was rarely jolly. (Actually Uncle Charlie was a fairly significant big screen actor in his day.)

I then recalled a former partner of mine who looked exactly like Gene Kelly and was always jovial. I could see him donning the outfit, and presenting that very same smile. Very life like.

Hi Logistician,
Thanks- You're to funny. I remember My 3 Sons. He does like Uncle Charlie.

I guess we all have some old 'creepster' we've known like him. He's the kind of guy that you don't know whether to love him or slap him, as my Mother would say.

Vikki - I've always wondered what's under a Scottish lad's kilt. Now I know - it's his KNEES!

Hi Vikki,
Sorry I didn't make it here sooner. I worked the week of New Year. There were only two of us working and we got slammed. I have just this one night off and work again this weekend. One night off next week and work again the rest of the week. I can't wait to retire, with pay!

Anyway, I smiled at your painting. As soon as I saw it, I knew you're on to something... Sure enough, your interpretation of the poem/song made me laugh throughout. So hilarious!

It took you only an hour to paint the picture, huh? Amazing!

How was your date with David Letterman? Did you mean a physical Letterman, or the show Letterman?

Thanks for the laugh. It made my day. I wish you a happy and prosperous 2009.

Happy New Year to you also.

Hi Tasha,
I'm glad you enjoyed.

Being 'swamped with work' in this economy is a good thing.

Letterman-Oh yeah- right! Only in my dreams would I have Letterman in the flesh! (But, if that ever happened, I guarantee you he'd be one happy man when he left my house.)

Happy New Year sweetgirl.
