Big Fat Liars or Buyer Beware?

Recently I had to buy a printer. Some parts in my Epson Printer had come to the end of their life cycle. It would have cost more to fix the Epson than just buy a new one. Owning a Hewlett Packard computer, I decided to purchase a HP Printer to go with it. Seems logical, huh?

I was delighted in the reduced cost of printers today but found that joy quickly dashed. The new inexpensive HP printer didn’t hold a candle to my Epson and had minimal adjustment features. The scans were completely unacceptable and it wasn't going to do what I needed for my website business.

I couldn’t take it back to the store. To set it up, I had to put the ink cartridges in and use it. The receipt clearly stated 'returns were to be made through the manufacture.' I looked at the box again. The packaging didn’t state the limitations of the system. In fact it lead you to believe it’s capabilities were beyond the facts and basically what my Epson was.

Even more disturbing, Hewlett Packard is a brand name company. The idea that HP actually produced such a crappy printer and exaggerated it's capabilities was outrageous to me. I had wasted my money and now had to spend even more money purchasing another printer that could actually facilitate my needs.

Yet again I had another company to add to my ‘Buyer Beware and Big Fat Liars' list! I should note- my attitude on the subject of manufacturers has been seeded by years of disappointment as a consumer. Once you purchase a product - the conversation is over. The chances of getting any company to just take responsibility for a dysfunctional product is virtually nil, much less a product I personally ‘ just don’t like.’

After much thought, I felt it would at least make me feel much better to write Hewlett Packard a blistering email and tell them exactly what I thought of their printer. I made sure the letter was written in a professional tone, but clearly stated my disappointment. I sent it directly to the CEO listed on the website contact.

I did get an email back. It asked me to describe the problem ‘in detail’ and ‘how sorry HP was that I was so unhappy.’ I briefly reiterated my assessment and understood nothing could be done at this point. I explained that my letter was only a cathartic exercise for me as a disgruntled consumer.

Are you ready? Yesterday morning a huge box arrived at my house. Hewlett Packard sent me (Free of charge! )their top of the line printer, scanner, fax, copier. They stated 'they didn't want me to be unhappy as customer and hoped THIS printer would better suit my needs.'

Ya think?!? Wow! I spent the whole afternoon setting it up and having a blast. It was Christmas in San Diego!

Now I’m quite sure Hewlett Packard got a kick out of my letter to the CEO and undoubtedly felt I deserved a prize for impudence, but the whole experience reminded me of something more important. I shouldn’t be so quick to assume the worse. We need to 'beware' as consumers and but you never know if you don’t try. At least,- that's what smart kids do.

Ever had an experience like that?

And by the way- Michael, Martha and I are presenting Art Challenge #4 this coming week. It's a fun one! Please come back and check it out.

And what does the painting at the top have to do with this blog? Absolutely nothing. As an artist, I always want to show you something. It’s called Kid Genius and is part of CBS The Sunday Morning Sun Logo collection. It's Acrylic, 16”x20” on canvas panel. For Christmas only I'm offering the original painting at $75+ S&H. If you want to see the deal I'm offering- check out it's original pricing under the Fantasy Link of The Red Chair Gallery.

I'm offering a 10% discount on all original painting (not including prints) in The Red Chair Gallery until Dec.1, 2008. You can contact me here.

I think the painting has something to do with the story ~ as you had a sunny disposition in the end with a new printer!

Like you, Greg is someone who will, at the least, write a letter to the company. If they aren't informed about their products by the consumers, how will they ever know if they aren't told.

And if you're fortunate enough, the company will actually care and try to do something to correct the matter. I would love to read the letter you sent them!

Kudos to you!

Hi Aleta,
Before I retired, I found that I always looked at the investment of time and usually didn't bother launching complaints. I now see that I should have many many times.

The letter was really no big deal. It was brief and just explained why I wasn't happy. I didn't ask for anything from them. I just explained that I was quite 'dissappointed' in a name brand company like Hewlett Packard.

I am amazed you got a favorable response from HP. I have had 2 Hp printers in my life. Both failed just prior to the warranty expiring. I was always under the impression that if the warranty was still in effect, the product would be repaired. Not so with HP, you have to ship the printer to them $$$. Then they assess the problem, and determine if it falls under warranty guidelines . You can guess how that went.

I have heard before that a proactive, positive, professional letter can do wonders. I guess you just proved that to be accurate.

Hi Eric,
Don’t you imagine that a lot of it has to do with just the luck of the draw-where it comes to ‘who’ gets your phone call or letter?

I had a pretty horrible warranty situation two years ago. When I bought my house I put in a very expensive Culligan water softener system. (We have real hard water here) I also purchased a 3-year warranty for parts and labor. I had a small problem with the system (estimated $5 plastic gasket) and called them. They said that ‘although the parts and labor were covered’ they wanted to charge me $130 just to drive to my home. I wasn’t a happy camper and refused to pay it. My Culligan system is still not fixed. I just set up my water to bypass it.

I'm so glad this story turned out well. I was getting really angry about you being duped! Also, remember with certain credit cards, you can dispute your purchase and have your credit card company fight with them over the charge and will often times win if done within 30 days.

Hi Odd Chick,
Thanks for visiting and your comment. Yes there are all kinds of alternatives. We just have to be willing to take the time and go for it.

BTW- we're doing Art Challenge #4 this Tuesday. You (Missy Artist) have to check it out. They're alot of fun.

For background on the Art Challenges the last two are listed under 10/05 and 9/07 on my side bar.

Good on you for persistence Vikki. If we pays our money we must expect satisfaction.
I think addressing your complaint to the CEO would have made all of the difference.

Cool Vikki. Earlier this year, just prior to starting my own blog, I read up on blogs and their potential power. One article suggested that dissatisfied customers were beginning to use their blogs to criticize manufacturers, and that consequently manufacturers were paying more attention to them. The article also indicated the potential negative financial impact to the company, if the blogger had a large following audience. Your is the first story with which I have had personal contact. Guess it's true.

Hi Logisitician,
Well if that's true then my blog should reflect positively on Hewlett Parkard. They definitely went (well) beyond what they had to and showed themselves to be a company that does care about buyer satisfaction.

Hi June in OZ,
Thanks. I'm sure you're right.

We had a saying in film business. It was an anology for the journey or search we all take at one time or another looking for our serenity, peace or lifting a veil of depression. It went," He just needs to find his OZ."

I always loved that.

I am glad your problem was resolved. I have a few HP products and am happy with them. I have not had to deal with warranty issues with any of them yet. I was reluctant to purchase HP after having dealt with their products at work and, on occasion, friends and family, in the past. I was not overwhelmed with their quality or usability. However, they seemed to have grown and improved as a company and I have changed my opinion. I have learned to revisit companies with whom I have had problems in the past. Life is change.

Hi Douglas,
Like you, I had never purchased a Hewlett Packard product- or PC (as far as that goes), until I purchased this one upon retirement. I was a loyal Mac girl.

I had a Mac at work and at home. (I even had the first little box Mac’s in 1983. I remember it weighed a ton!) I considered HP products lower end and limited for my needs.

But, HP has survived the ever changing evolution with computer products and today considered a top competitor and brand name.

Life is definitely the ability to change.

I have been off HP printrs (for color, anyway) for some time. Unless you invest in their high end product, it just ain't there. Canon has an outstanding product. But Epson is the best. Up and down their line of printers.

But good job getting their attention - and a response - and the response you GOT!!! Well done!!

Hi Lou,
Thanks. I have to admit, I miss my Epson, -but I'll give this fancy smancy HP a chance. It's got quite a control panel and so far it's been great. It's a 'live and learn' lesson for me.

Michael, Martha and I have Challenge #4 coming tomorrow. It's a good one. Please come back and check it out.

I was getting angry as I was reading the post I admit it, but I'm glad it was resolved in the end. I'm not a big fan of HP, nor is my husband and he works as IT manager in a big global corporation. I prefer Canon printers or Epson.

The painting is so cute! I love your happy sun!

Hi Manuela,
I know exactly how you feel. We get so used to getting the dirty end of the stick as consumers, we just assume the worse.

Although, HP came through with flying colors on this one- so that in itself is a good thing.
